TWO MORE SLEEPS UNTIL I MOVE HOME!
So for those of you who do not know (though really, why would you want to?), for the past month, I've been working with Media Relations and Alumni Services at my college, fulfilling an unpaid internship as part of my Journalism program. I'm working today (working being used loosely, since I have no work to do), and tomorrow, then moving home on Saturday.
My roommates moved out on Sunday. The dorm is eerily silent, desks and dressers and kitchen tables piled in the hallways. Cleaning people are crawling all over the place like termites. Termites with yellow rubber gloves, vacuum cleaners, and Lysol. Because college students are germy or dirty or something XD
I'm up in Toronto, and for those of you not following the weather up here, we're getting hit by some nasty wind. Not as bad as in the southern States, but still pretty strong. They're predicting winds up to 100 km/h for today. That's kilometres per hour for those of you not with our measurement system; means that it's about 60 mph.
But back to my internship. Here's a list of assignments I have completed to date, in 18 days.
- article on the college's tourism and travel program to appear in a trade magazine
- profile on a student who went from a 57 average to acceptance into a prestigious university
- information compilation on faculty who are experts in their field for college/media resource
- 73 photos for possible use in a virtual tour of the college
- research on other colleges'/universities' virtual tours to see what works and what doesn't
- solicitation letter to college alumni saying "YOU SHOULD GIVE US MONEY BECAUSE WITHOUT THE EDUCATION WE GAVE YOU, YOU ARE NOTHING
"
- profile on theatre program graduate who has risen to fame on the local stages
- 3 drafts of a writeup of new college campus opening in September
When I first started with Alumni Services (two weeks into my internship), my supervisor thought everything I cranked out was made of gold and that she could keep me busy for days. I think she's now come to realize that I am not a magical little paper pixie; instead, I am a freaking work robot. The paper hits my desk, I look over it, I make my notes, fix up the copy on my computer, print it, and hand it back to her. This usually takes an hour.
She literally told me, "YOU'RE TOO FAST!" Meaning that she's having trouble keeping up, and I spent a couple hours a day playing Bejeweled Blitz at my desk while I wait for her to get back to me.
But this has been an AWESOME experience, and I'll remember it forever. Particularly the time that my supervisor from Media Relations told me to shut up, lol. Don't worry, it's not what it sounds like.
You see, I'm required by my program coordinator to fill out paperwork each week detailing what I did. My supervisor must then sign it, and I must submit it to the prog-coor. Here's what happened the first week.
Me: Heeeeeey, Supervisor. Can you sign my Weekly Activity Report, then I'll go hand it in?
Supervisor: Sure. *signs her name, and the date, passes the paper back to me* There you go.
Me: Ummm . . . . You wrote April 8, 2010. It's 2011.
Supervisor: Ahaha! Oops! *We have a giggle, she fixes the error, and I go on my merry way.*
THE NEXT WEEK:
Me: Hiiiiii, Supervisor. Got a minute to sign my Weekly Activity report?
Supervisor: Absolutely. *signs her name, then has to change pens. I see my opportunity, and pounce*
Me: By the way, Supervisor, it's 2011.
Supervisor: . . . . *bursts out laughing* SHUT UP! AHAHA!
Me: O_O OH GOSH, I'M SORRY!
Yeah. Obviously, I don't call her 'Supervisor,' but I highly doubt she'd like me to give out her name, lol.
I suppose I should be going, yes? Yes. I believe I should. I'll be back to prattle on aimlessly another time. Stay creative!
